Blair R Martin was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1937, and graduated from the University of Glasgow as a mechanical engineer in 1958. He subsequently worked on flight instruments (1958-1960) and CNC -- control systems for machine tools (1962-1970). This led him into the computer industry, first in computer printer development (1970-1980), then in software development and teaching (1981-1990). Later, he launched a consulting business which operated from 1991 until 1998. He now describes his occupation as "retired," but continues working and teaching on a volunteer basis.

Mr. Martin and his wife currently live on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, in Canada. Both were born and brought up in the UK, but later moved to the USA. (They met at Penn State University while studying for post-graduate degrees.) In 1990 they emigrated from the USA into Canada, but since their two children live in the USA, they divide their lives and their interests between both countries.
