This is the talk page for discussing improvements to the Nordic countries article. This is not a forum for general discussion of the article's subject.
Estonia is sometimes called a Nordic country, and sometimes called a Baltic country, I think we should mention it on this wikipedia page and add it apart of the map in light green, to say sometimes this country is included. Zyxrq (talk) 01:09, 3 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What do you mean with potential Nordic countries? Estonia isn't "trying to become" a Nordic country, it is a Nordic country because of its history, culture and identity, regardless of how many people outside of Estonia view it as such. General lack of knowledge about a country is never a good basis for its regional categorization. 2001:1530:1010:C73B:81D3:E22C:ED26:FDCA (talk) 15:33, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I somehow agree with this in the way that the expression « Nordic » have been « privatized » by the 5 Nordic countries when they build this common identity after the end of WWII.
« Nordic » only meant « belong to the north ». So in this dimension, other European territories can be classified as Nordic like Estonia, Carelia etc…..
Despite this common « Nordic » belief in Estonia, the main issue here is that there is not enough sources that characterizes the common cultural background between Northern European territories outside of those 5 Nordic countries. It can be explained by many reasons, notably the fact that Estonian and carelian folklore and indigenous cultures have been isolated from the rest of the region, and threatened very often, mainly by Russia, and therefore were not the subject of as much studies as the others. Also those cultures have been modified deeply by various occupiers. This is unfortunately the consequence of countries that have been dominated by foreign powers.
For me a difference should be made between the formal Nordic cooperation countries which is very much political, and the broader « Nordic » definition, which is much focus on culture (and especially indigenous culture). But as I said, there is more source about the former than about the latter.
It is just my personal opinion here, but outside of political consideration, I totally understand that it is very strange to see Finland as a Nordic country without seeing Estonia the same way. It is also important to mention that each time Estonia made decision as independant people, they wanted to get closer to Nordics. 5W (talk) 20:55, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Estonia will need to be more strongly established as part of the Nordic Countries in WP:RS if anything is to be done about this on Wikipedia, it is more internationally recognized as part of the Baltic states. Estonians considering themselves Nordic is big enough a topic that it is covered in its own Wikipedia article linked above, but perhaps some more information on it could be added to this article as well.
