A request for efforts on Wikisource..
[edit]Anyone able to help get: s:Index:NBS Circular 553.djvu Transcribed? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 00:55, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
- To be honest I don't really see the point. Anyone curious can just look at the scan. It can even be OCR'd. If you wanted to make this useful for modern times, you could try to put all of the color names into a database of some kind, but Wikisource isn't capable of hosting something like that. –jacobolus (t) 01:31, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
- Ideally, the transcription should ultimately also be into Wikidata, assuming someone is able to convert the color references into RGB triplets or xyY values. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:11, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

Sorting color shades
[edit]The organization of colors on Shades of red, Shades of blue, etc. is seemingly random. Would it be appropriate to sort these all alphabetically? This came up because I was considering where to merge the content of Ruby (color) and Sapphire (color). Reconrabbit 18:05, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- These articles are mostly an unencyclopedic mishmash of unsourced trivia. The infoboxes, with their coordinates made up by one or another random Wikipedian or found online somewhere, take up an absurd amount of space. To try to fix them though would be a huge amount of work, especially finding better semi-consistent sources, getting accurate measurements of these various named colors and then properly explaining where the names came from and what range of colors they apply to. Ideally there'd probably be some classification by color (e.g. ISCC–NBS designation). –jacobolus (t) 18:38, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- I will probably go for that then. If we are to go by ISCC-NBS designation, should "pinks" even be on the "shades of red" page? I am tempted to just blank the more arbitrary of these listings, such as all the Crayola colors that don't have a single non-primary source. (Edit: I've noticed that at least on Shades of blue, the colors claim to be sorted by highest value in HSV terms, but this is obviously not true as evidenced by the first three entries in the list.) Reconrabbit 18:53, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- Whether pink fits with red or not is a bit arbitrary. My impression is that the word "pink" was originally just a shorthand for light red. For better or worse, in recent years it is also often used for much more purplish colors. –jacobolus (t) 19:47, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- I've already started removing Crayola pencil and crayon colors that have duplicated entries at List of Crayola crayon colors
or List of Crayola colored pencil colors. I believe this to be in line with the discussion in Summer 2022 here. If unwarranted feel free to revert me. Reconrabbit 19:46, 17 June 2024 (UTC)

Color templates in dark mode
[edit]I've taken to implementing dark mode support, so that the color displays correctly in dark mode. For example, Template:Infobox color on Black now displays black in the color swatch beneath the title. You will need to double-check that I performed this correctly; some colors seem to be completely different in mw-no-invert on my system.

- What should be done for the {{Text color templates see also}} series and {{Blue pencil}}? The former series is used for emphasis in various places, and in Template:Map of American English. Several talk pages use the latter, but Nordenfelt v Maxim Nordenfelt Guns and Ammunition Co Ltd is the only article that transcludes it. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 04:22, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
