Ord(i)nances

Take a look at the picture text. It says "ordinance" - not ordnance, which is the correct word.--JRed July 7, 2005 16:32 (UTC)

Confinement

Presently, the article includes this:

"Therefore, the pressure wave produced by a high explosive is not significantly increased by confinement as detonation occurs so quickly that the resulting plasma does not expand much before all the explosive material has reacted."

As a layman---i.e., someone who has never used high explosives---I'm not sure this is quite correct. I suppose, yes, that confinement is unnecessary if "confinement" be taken to mean some sort of artifact, e.g., a metal container or even a container made of heavy paper; but my sense is that a high explosive won't explode if it is not "confined" by, at least, the atmosphere, i.e., by atmospheric pressure. In fact, I wonder whether "detonation" of, say, nitroglycerin can occur if there is no surrounding air through which a shock wave can spread.
