Thank you for catching the similarities between the Bible Translation website glossary entry for Formal Equivalence and my Wikipedia contribution on the same subject. I am the author of both entries. I give permission for the material on the Bible Translation website (which I own and host) to be used in this entry on Wikipedia. I deliberately modified portions of my original website glossary entry to make my Wikipedia entry more philosophically neutral, in keeping with the overall tone of Wikipedia.

Formal equivalence and literal translation

Is there a difference between literal translation and formal equivalence?

I presume that most translations would have to change word order and add words (such as and, of, etc which in some languages are included as part of other words) in order for sentences to make sense. would this still be considered literal translation --Cap 19:56, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
