Widow's death
[edit]Would someone clarify information found in the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica (http://88.1911encyclopedia.org/H/HA/HALS_FRANS.htm) from which most of the article is lifted. (... we find his widow seeking outdoor relief from the guardians of the poor, and dying obscurely in a hospital.)
Was she mugged? Or just looking for a social worker? Or was the social worker looking for her? Did she catch pneumonia? Was the illness obscure, or was she just unknown? Had she been living in a "poor house?"

July 26, 2005 revert
[edit]The recent replacement of this article's content contains wonderful information. However, it's not written in an encylopedic style, and may be a copyright violation (the byline is a tipoff). It also wiped most of the images and all the links.

The article on Frans Hals that is now on the Wikipedia contains a lot of mistakes. Apparently it is not based on up to date literature, but (mainly) on an encyclopedia from 1911. But science on Hals did'nt stop in 1911. That's why the article was reverted by me (see above). It's a pity that the new article was removed. It's not a copyright violation at all: I wrote the text myself, and it's mainly based on a book I wrote for the Frans Hals Museum, where I'm working. Find my text under the blue name given here above (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index etc. etc. etc.] Antoon Erftemeijer, Haarlem, The Netherlands
- Thank you very much for your contribution, Antoon!
- Which parts are inaccurate? Let's fix those and integrate the two versions. -->>sparkit|TALK<< 15:14, August 4, 2005 (UTC)
- Is anyone already working to integrate the two articles here? Because that's what we have right now: one article imposed on top of another, each dealing in its own way with the subject and yet causing redundancy in presenting Hal's life, work, influence, etc. InvisibleSun 23:40, 6 September 2005 (UTC)
- I attempted to merge the two articles into one. Redundant texts were removed. I know little of Frans Hals so a review is required. Also I found some sentences unencyclopedic so I adapted them to make them more NPOV. Again a review is required on this too. Felsir 10:10, 2 November 2005 (UTC)
Reference:
[edit]Dear All,
Well, there are some good sites in German about Frans Hals if you would be so kind to me and explain how I can fit some reference points into the text than it might end up as an encyclopedia of his life.
I will add the webpage for the reference of the 8 children. http://www.franshals.de/ . He had altogether 10 children. 5 of them were also painters in their later life. If you have a look on the Greman wikipedia site you will see the names.
Thanks for your time.

Kirstin - I added a new reference section to the article, and now you can add your references - as you do regularly.
Please add english refs, thank you Modernist (talk) 13:16, 17 August 2008 (UTC)
Double image
[edit]The image beneath of "The Jolly Drinker" is exactly the same as "The Merry Drinker", only a different adjective. I think it should be removed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.179.108.40 (talk) 17:49, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Boy with a lute
[edit]Removed Boy with a lute' because it is a rather poor file, low resolution and blurry. We will try to get a better resolution and then add back..

Further reading
[edit]This is listed in Further reading: Henry R. Lew (2018): Imaging the World, Hybrid Publishing, Chapter 9: Frans Hals. No such book is listed at amazon.com, books.google.com, or catalog.loc.gov. By googling, I found that Lew gave a course that include "Imaging the World" in its title: "Henry R Lew: Course (90 minutes) – Art and Ophthalmology: ‘Imaging the World & the Undisguised Brushstroke Line: A Journey where Visual Processing & Art Mutually Intersect’! RANZCO Annual Conference, Melbourne 2016." By googling, I also found that a book based on the course was planned: "Another book “Imaging the World” expected to be available in early 2018 is the odd man out. It is based on a course (as mentioned above) which Dr Lew conducted at the RANZCO Annual General Conference in 2016." I found no evidence that it was published, but that may be because it was self-published. See Hybrid publishing. I will not remove this listing because the fact that a previous editor stated that chapter 9 is about Frans Hals suggests that that editor saw a copy of the book. The listing, however, may be pointless, because Wikipedia readers may not be able to find the book. Perhaps another editor has more information about the book than I do. New lead
[edit]Thumperward recently added the Lead too short tag to this article, and I have removed it. I shall explain very soon. --- Frans Fowler (talk) 18:01, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
- or just expand it? It is rather short. Johnbod (talk) 19:57, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
Until recently, this article had a lead section of commendable concision. However, it attracted one of those great big banners that might make the ordinary reader wonder whether everything is quite right. I'm not sure I've provided an overview of all important aspects of the article, but I do hope the new lead is preferable to that banner, and that others (@Thumperward perhaps?) will help make it better ---- Frans Fowler (talk) 20:06, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
- "Commendable concision" is usually the problem here, where editors think that the idea is that the lead should be an exercise in brevity. Thanks for putting in the effort: I still think the lead does an imperfect job of summarising the article, but I'll see what I can do to address that myself.
