- What's the difference? Shell corporation has a definition from Barron's that seems to describe exactly what are sold as "shelf corporations." Shelf corporations, like shell corporations, are sometimes used to anonymize transactions. It looks to me as if they are the same thing, with a different name to downplay the association with fraud.
